"Depressions", University California Santa Barbara Campus

5 x 7 inches
oil on panel

I have been teaching a painting class for the Family Vacation Center at UCSB for the past couple summers. I have watched about a 100 beginners attempt this view... and I have to say I like a lot of their paintings better then this one.

The thing that trips them up the most is the darkness of the trees and the cliff edge. It seems to be very difficult to get that cliff to stand upright and be bright but still feel dark against the ocean and sky.
